About the event
Know a teacher that loves Chemistry? Know one who would like to hone his/her skills, or just collaborate with other Chemistry teachers from around the Valley? STEMteachersPHX.org is happy present our first Chemistry workshop. The sessions are specifically designed to meet the needs of each grade level. Chemistry made simple and fun for all ages/abilities.
What: Chemistry Workshop: K-12 When: December 2rd, 2017 from 10 am to 1 pm Where: Hamilton 3700 S, Arizona Avenue, Chandler, AZ 85248. Costs: $12 online pre-registration, $15 at the door (cash or checks only) Register:
Elementary School and Middle School: This aim of this session is to highlight physical vs. chemical change and will cover 5th and 8th grade standards. The goal is to create a storyline based on a microscopic particle model that can then be applied to macroscopic substances for further classification. From there, students will conduct an investigation to determine if creating mixtures of some substances can lead to the formation of new substances. This will be followed by a discussion based on the particle model to explain what is happening.
This session will lead to a collaborative discussion between elementary, middle school, and high school teachers… how does the storyline flow? How can this be simplified and go deeper for your grade level? Look at vertical alignment between all K-12 and discuss common misconceptions between students.
High School: Why is water H2O and not H3O? Why is table salt NaCl and not Na2Cl3? Come explore chemical compounds and how they are put together! This session is for teachers (in student mode) to work through a new bridging activity between two existing units in AMTA’s modeling chemistry materials. We will examine some compounds using an online database, make some predictions about other compounds and their formulas, build models of compounds using Legos, and examine data from the periodic table- both a modern chart and one of Mendeleev’s originals. Cell phones will be used for science in this session!
High School: Get introduced to chemical equilibrium via the equilibrium board game and the solubility of calcium hydroxide. We determine rules of the board game to model the behavior of vaporizing and condensing butane. This tool can then be used to model the behavior of the dissolving and crystallizing a solid in solution. We will measure the solubility of calcium hydroxide using Labquests and conductivity probes and model that with the board game.
LEGO KITS: Lego kits will be available for purchase: 1 class set for $18.00 buy extra pieces for $5 or $22 for one class set plus extra pieces.
Need whiteboards? We have 81cm x 61cm whiteboards for sale ($8 each). We may also be able to customize your boards for you. For more information: http://stemteachersphx.org/ or email wendy@modelinginstruction.org
