Middle School Math: Modeling Functions & Linear Relationships
Mon, Jun 19
|Carson Junior High School
This workshop will focus on mathematics standards that address how to build and model functions and linear relationships. Participants will be immersed in the Modeling Method of Instruction, a research-based pedagogy that strives to teach students to do math and learn as mathematicians do.

About the event
This workshop will immerse participants in the Modeling Method of Instruction, a research-based pedagogy that strives to teach students to do math and learn as mathematicians do. During the workshop, participants will use resources developed to support the pedagogy and engage in learning as their students would.
All participants will be given access to a complete set of instructional materials (including teacher notes and student activity sheets) for a unit on Functions Leading to Linear Relationships. Activities will focus on middle school mathematics standards, and will be appropriate for (and easily adjustable to) grade levels ranging from elementary to high school. The overarching goal of the unit is to help students begin to understand the idea of mathematical functions as relationships between two quantities. The unit focuses on practical, real-world samples of related quantities, which students are asked to represent using data tables, graphs, words, and ultimately formulas.

This workshop will meet Monday-Thursday for a total of 30 hours of professional development. Participants in this workshop will receive a one-year membership to the American Modeling Teachers Association.
